The first Soccer Silicon Valley Annual Dinner will be held next Friday (October 24, 2008) at the Starlight Banquet Hall (680 Minnesota Ave., San Jose). Don Gagliardi talks about this event: |
The Representatives of the San Jose Earthquakes and English Premier League's Tottenham Hotspur announced yesterday in San Jose a long term partnership between the two clubs. "The Earthquakes and Major League Soccer are delighted and excited with the creation of this great professional soccer relationship," said San Jose Earthquakes owner Lew Wolf. "We believe our coming together with he historic Tottenham Hotspur FC unites the premier soccer league in England with the premier soccer league in the US."
Mostly based on a marketing partnership, the agreement also includes collaboration on administrative aspects, community and charitable endeavors and the option for the Earthquakes to play a match in England against Tottenham.
Founded in 1882 as Hotspurs FC in Lonon, "The Spurs" have a long and successful history including 2 English Football League Championships (in 1951 and 1961), 6 English FA Cups (last time in 1991), 4 English League Cups (last time in 2007-2008), 2 UEFA Cups (1972 and 1984), 1 UEFA Cup winners' Cup (1963). This season, they are currently in the 20th (and last) position in the English Premier League with 2 points in 7 games.

The San Jose Frogs (Premier Develoment League) announced today they are closing down the franchise. The main reason is the lack of support they have received from the fans last season. The club had hoped they could have a minimum of 100 fans at each home game but, after a succesful season opener against the San Francisco Seals in May, they barely reached 20 tickets sold in most of following games. You,
like me, probably always wondered why, in the US, Soccer has not became
the popular sport it is in almost all the rest of the world.
Like me, you probably heard many times the common explanations: TV
channels don't invest in this sport because there are not enough breaks
to insert commercials; Americans find it boring because very few goals
are scored; A sport in which the best players are not always those who
score goals makes no sense in a country used to see statistics as the
explanation for everything, etc...
I don't find any of those explanations satisfying. I actually feel
exactly the opposite: Soccer doesn't take off in this country because
we are trying to sell it for what it is not: another international
sport with worldwide celebrities and, as a consequence, a big money
maker for promoters, TV channels and players.
Those of you who....
